Special Alert

Closures and cancellations due to COVID-19

03/12/2020
On May 19, the Premier’s Office announced that all publicly funded schools in Ontario will remain closed for the duration of the 2019-2020 school year, in response to COVID-19. As such, Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) schools and adult learning centres will not reopen on May 31, 2020. The decision to extend the school closure period for the remainder of the school year is based on advice from Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health in order to protect the health and safety of students, families and staff.

The following programs/meetings will not run or are closed:
 • Permits (Community Use of Schools)
 • All EarlyON and Child Care Centres
 • Adult and continuing education
 • Dual Credit and Cooperative education programs
In addition, the Education Centre and the Career Centre are closed to the public.

As our youth sit at home isolating and navigating online school, the stress and anxiety of the global pandemic are compounded by recent events that have shown a spotlight on anti-black racism. The goal of this initiative is to deliver care packages of donated "new" items such as art supplies, journals, books, gift cards, letters of solidarity, and other support materials (full list below) directly to the homes of black youth and let them know that they are cared for, seen, and supported by the community.

MCASC has an application form on their website where parents of black school-aged youth (JK-12) can apply for a care package for their children. Applications simply ask for contact information (parent name, address, phone number, email) and number of children. On their website, there is also a volunteer form for the project, as MCASC needs volunteers to donate items, collect donations, build care packages, and deliver care packages. There is also a Facebook group for the project, and MCASC is accepting financial donations via e-transfer (helpmakingchange@gmail.com).

Current list of "new" items (not accepting gently used for this project) to donate for school-aged children JK-12:

Letters of solidarity and support

Poems (letters & poems can be sent to thenorthernappeal@gmail.com to handle printing & distribution)

Greeting cards

Musical instruments

Board games

Books with a main character who is a POC

Art supplies

Journals

Spa care products

Makeup for POC skin tone

Haircare for POC hair

Ice cream/Frozen yogurt gift cards

Sporting goods

Electronics accessories (chargers, earbuds)

Plants

Baking supplies/baked goods

Jewelry

Candy

Lego

Beanie Boos/Stuffies
